Overview
Rootbound sells organic produce, pantry staples, and everyday grocery items online. Before this project, Rootbound had no ecommerce store at all — just a small local presence and a waitlist of customers asking to order online. The brand needed a Shopify store built from the ground up, one that could handle fresh and perishable goods, recurring orders, and a checkout process people wouldn’t abandon halfway through.
The Challenge
A discovery session with the Rootbound team surfaced a few core problems before a single page was built.
✓ There was no existing store, so every feature had to be designed around grocery-specific needs like stock rotation and delivery windows.
✓ Customers wanted a way to reorder regularly without repeating checkout every time.
✓ A standard Shopify checkout wasn’t built for recurring grocery orders.
✓ Product categories needed to reflect how people actually shop for groceries, not how a typical retail store organizes inventory.
✓ Trust was a concern, since shoppers were being asked to buy perishable food from a brand they’d only seen locally.
Our Strategy
The plan focused on two priorities. First, build a grocery-ready Shopify store from scratch with the right structure underneath it. Second, layer in subscriptions and a simplified checkout so ordering felt as easy as walking into a store.
Phase 1: Store Foundation and Catalog Build
✓ Built the Shopify store from scratch, including theme structure, navigation, and product categorization suited to grocery shopping.
✓ Set up inventory logic to reflect perishable stock and delivery scheduling.
✓ Created product pages with clear sourcing and freshness information to build buyer confidence.
✓ Structured collections by meal type and dietary preference instead of generic product categories.
Phase 2: Subscription and Checkout Simplification
✓ Added a subscription box feature so customers could set up recurring orders without re-entering details each time.
✓ Simplified the checkout flow by reducing unnecessary steps and form fields.
✓ Added clear delivery date selection during checkout to avoid confusion at fulfillment.
✓ Tested the full purchase journey on mobile, since most grocery browsing happened on phones.
Results
✓ Rootbound launched its first fully functional online store, opening a new sales channel beyond its local footprint.
✓ Subscription sign-ups became a steady part of weekly orders soon after launch.
✓ Checkout abandonment dropped noticeably after the flow was simplified.
Client Testimonial
“We had customers asking to order online for months, but we had nothing to show them. Now they can shop, subscribe, and reorder without calling us to ask how.”

Key Takeaway
Grocery ecommerce isn’t a smaller version of retail ecommerce — it runs on different logic. Rootbound’s launch shows that when a Shopify store is built around how people actually buy food, subscriptions and repeat orders follow naturally.
